Se fundó en 1935 como resultado de la fusión de Twentieth Century Pictures (creada en 1933 por Joseph Schenck y Darryl F. Zanuck) y la Fox Film Corp. (formada en 1915 por William Fox). Este nuevo estudio produjo hasta mediados de la década de 1940 principalmente westerns y musicales, como también notables largometrajes como
Las uvas de la ira (1940) y
Nido de víboras (1948). En 1953 introdujo la técnica del cinemascope con
El manto sagrado, y posteriormente realizó exitosos filmes como
El rey y yo (1956) y
Al sur del Pacífico (1958). Después del fracaso económico de
Cleopatra (
1963), el estudio se recuperó con
La novicia rebelde (

Patton (
1970),
M.A.S.H (
1970) y
La guerra de las galaxias (1977), la película con mayores utilidades económicas de la industria del cine hasta aquel entonces. En 1981 la compañía fue adquirida por el magnate petrolero Marvin Davis, y en 1985 pasó a manos de
Rupert Murdoch, quien fusionó sus compañías estadounidenses de cine y televisión bajo el holding Fox, Inc.
